SIGN NOW: MAGA wants to make it illegal to disagree with them. Sign the petition to STOP this anti-free speech crackdown >>
John, Trump and his cronies think that last week’s horrifying political assassination is all the pretext they need to escalate their government crackdown on free speech.
Here’s what they’re saying this week:
- Stephen Miller is vowing to use the full weight of the government to “disrupt, dismantle, and destroy” left-leaning organizations – which he’s blaming for the shooting without a shred of evidence. [1]
- Attorney General Pam Bondi is warning the government will “absolutely target you” if they suspect you of “hate speech” [2] – which Trump is defining as anyone who treats him “unfairly”. [3]
- and Trump himself is demanding the people who peacefully protested him in a D.C. restaurant last week be “put in jail”. [4]
Trump has long wanted to rule like a dictator – and now his administration is signaling they intend to start now.
Here’s the good news: we have checks and balances for a reason – and Trump can’t make the worst of his anti-free speech dreams a reality without Congress’s help.
And just this week, public outcry forced Trump’s allies on the Hill to walk back a bill that would have let him and Marco Rubio strip Americans of our passports on little more than an accusation – with no trial. [5]
John, MAGA wants to see how far Congress will let them go. YOUR representatives need to hear loud and clear that we’re watching and demanding they protect our First Amendment rights.
Tell Congress: don’t help Trump shut down dissent. We are watching and ready to mobilize against any attacks on our free speech >>
Democracy depends on open, peaceful discourse. It’s how a free society resolves our differences.
But now Trump is seizing on last week's reprehensible act of political violence to paint all opposition to him with the same broad brush, so he can use the full force of our government to shut down any political speech he doesn't like.
MAGA is trying to make it illegal to disagree with them – because they don't share your belief in free speech, in the Constitution, or in democracy.
That’s why we’re making it crystal clear to Congress: we’re watching. Our elected representatives must speak up for our rights – and deny Trump his dreams of taking away a guaranteed American right.
Common Cause members have mobilized against these attacks before. Just last year, we defeated the so-called “nonprofit killer” bill that would have let Trump shut down groups he didn’t like.
And behind the scenes, plenty of Republican lawmakers have reservations about Trump’s second term overreaches. We can turn that into real wins – but only if we act together.
John, Congress needs to hear us. Tell them: Don’t side with Trump’s crackdown. Don’t give him the power to silence dissent. And know that we’re watching every vote.
If we don’t speak out now, we could lose our right to speak out entirely. Tell Congress you expect them to protect your First Amendment rights >>
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
