Stand With Parkland | The National Association of Families for Safe Schools

Hi team,

Across the country, schools are exploring new tools to keep students safe. One of the latest ideas being tested: rapid-response drones.

In Florida, a pilot program is preparing to test drones capable of breaking through windows, deploying non-lethal deterrents, and sending live video back to law enforcement. The idea is simple: respond to a threat as quickly as possible because every second counts for the innocent students and teachers in the line of fire.

At Stand with Parkland, we believe innovation has a role to play in school safety. But new ideas must be thoroughly tested to ensure they protect students, not create new risks.

That’s why we’re watching this pilot program closely. Questions remain about how these drones would function in real-world emergencies, what safeguards would be in place for students and teachers, and how reliable the systems would be under stress.

Our president, Tony Montalto, put it best: “We could see this being part of a layered approach, which we’ve been very careful to take here in Florida. We applaud the ingenuity, but we need a lot of fact-checking and a lot of seeing how it works.”

But here’s the truth: if we’re going to continue pushing for both innovative and proven technologies to use in layered solutions that keep students safe, we need your help.

Can we count on you to chip in $15 or anything you can to help us continue advocating for safer schools? Every contribution strengthens our ability to ask the hard questions, push for transparency, and ensure schools adopt safety measures that truly protect students nationwide.
