Greetings Ward 8 Residents,

The holiday weekend is fast approaching and the traditional way residents celebrated the 4th of July holiday is not advised. Mayor Muriel Bowers is advising residents to stay home to mitigate the spread of coronavirus.

Please keep the following in mind when planning your 4th of July event:

  • Outdoor activities are preferred over indoor activities, but the virus can still spread outdoors, so please take precautions by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.
  • When inviting people over or going to another person’s gathering, consider the available space. Only host or attend events where guests have space to social distance.
  • If anyone in your household does not feel well, CANCEL THE GATHERING and remind guests to stay home if they do not feel well.
It may not feel like the coronavirus is real, but it is disproportionately affecting African-Americans here in the District. COVID-19 is still here and to date has taken the lives of 553 residents in the District of Columbia. I urge residents from gathering in large groups, limit their use of shared items, and ensure they practice proper hand hygiene and clean the surfaces in their homes should they celebrate with family and friends. This is the 'new normal' - take precaution and be safe.

Regards,

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8
