Dear Friend,

Huge news! Last night, the city of West Hollywood, California, adopted a groundbreaking ban on the retail sale of live animals.

This is the first law of its kind in California, and the most expansive in the country. West Hollywood is the only city to ban the retail sale of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, arachnids, and hermit crabs.

World Animal Protection worked directly with West Hollywood and Mayor Byers to enact this ordinance. While many cities have banned the sale of dogs and cats, only a handful have protected more animals. And West Hollywood is the first in the nation to include hermit crabs, who are ripped from their homes on the beach, packed into bags, and shipped to mills.

The new law shuts down the cruel mill-to-pet-store pipeline. Virtually all animals sold in pet stores come from mills where hundreds or thousands of animals are confined to small cages, tubs, and tanks without adequate food, water, or veterinary care. Sick and injured animals are ignored, gassed, or frozen to death.

Let’s keep up the momentum! Download our toolkit to learn how to help animals suffering in pet stores near you: [link removed]
