Politicians in at least 51 countries used anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric during elections, NGO finds
-- The Guardian
John,
A new study released this week revealed a chilling reality: politicians in at least 51 countries used anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric during elections last year. From labeling LGBTQ+ identity as a “foreign threat” to condemning so-called “gender ideology,” extremists are escalating their attacks - and trans people are the primary target.
This isn’t abstract. Here in the U.S. and around the world, LGBTQ+ elected officials have been slandered as “groomers” and “pedophiles,” had their homes targeted with bomb threats, and even been forced to flee for safety. The rise in hate speech has emboldened bigots and fueled dangerous legislation aimed at silencing our community.
But here’s the other side of the story: LGBTQ+ leaders are stepping up like never before. That’s why we need your support. Your donation today helps us train and prepare more LGBTQ+ candidates—especially trans leaders—to fight back against this hate, win seats at every level of government, and change the narrative for good.
At Victory Institute, we are training and supporting courageous LGBTQ+ people—especially trans leaders—to run for office and win. Our most recent training brought together outstanding trans and nonbinary leaders ready to push back against this rising tide of hate. And the research is clear: when LGBTQ+ candidates run for office, especially trans candidates, they change hearts and minds, shifting public opinion toward greater acceptance and equality.
And it’s working. LGBTQ+ elected officials are winning, leading, and passing legislation that improves lives.
We cannot let extremists define the narrative. Together, we can build a future where LGBTQ+ people are not just surviving attacks, but leading with pride and power. Donate today to continue this essential work!
Thank you for standing with us in this fight.
