John,
The COVID-19 expanded unemployment benefit is set to expire at the end of this month – and right now the GOP has no plans to extend or replace it.
Instead of receiving about $980 a week, the average unemployed American is going to get about $380 — a reduction of about 61%. That’s a substantial decrease for the 31 million Americans who are currently receiving employment benefits.
If this expansion ends, we know that women and families will be hit the hardest. Many will struggle to put food on the table. While the Democratic-led House passed legislation to extend the $600-per-week increase through January, the Senate Republican majority is vowing not to continue the provision.
We must fight tooth and nail to protect this critical lifeline for millions who are out of work as a result of this pandemic. Will you sign our petition calling on the GOP to extend these crucial unemployment benefits for working families?

Republicans like Mitch McConnell say they want to replace the program with a different policy, like bonuses for those who find a job. Newsflash for you, Mitch: the entire point of unemployment is to help people when they don’t have a job and can’t get a job.
The GOP is arguing that the $600 expansion disincentivizes people from looking for work because they could earn more through unemployment. Rather than raising the federal minimum wage or fighting for higher wages, the GOP would rather cut benefits and keep wages low to satisfy their corporate donors.
Without action, laid-off workers in some states like Mississippi would receive just $213 per week in unemployment benefits. That is not enough. We deserve more from our government in this time of crisis.
Please add your name to our petition calling out the GOP for leaving our most vulnerable Americans uncertain about their future and how to make ends meet.
If enough of us speak out, we can make it clear that the Women’s March movement is coming for their seats this November and beyond if they choose not to act.
With resolve,
Women’s March Team
