Hi John

Sep 22nd - Last Chance for Public Comment on DOE’s Endangerment Finding Reversal

 What Happened:

The Trump administration's EPA announced plans to overturn the critical 2009 "endangerment finding" that allows regulation of greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane under the Clean Air Act. The Department of Energy released a supporting report to justify this rollback of climate protections.

Why It Matters:

Overturning this finding would unravel a decade of U.S. climate regulations and vehicle emission standards. Your voice can help preserve these critical climate protections. Submit public comments opposing these findings by Sept 22nd (ideally in PDF format).

Let's back up a step and explain how we got here: This is the scientific and legal foundation that says climate change is real, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and that global warming pollution endangers public health and welfare as defined under the Clean Air Act. The Endangerment Finding has been the cornerstone of all U.S. climate policy since 2009, when Barack Obama first used it to enact rules limiting pollution from power plants, cars, and eventually to sign the Paris climate agreement. It has survived legal challenges and has near-universal scientific support.

The DOE report claims that global warming is good for you, actually! Because "the growing amount of CO2 in the atmosphere directly influences the earth system by promoting plant growth (global greening), thereby enhancing agricultural yields, and by neutralizing [ocean acidification]."

This is obviously false, and flies in the face of every peer-reviewed scientific report on climate change from the last 10 years — whether from the United Nations, the European Union, or the federal government’s own most recent National Climate Assessment, which was released less than two years ago (and subsequently deleted by Trump).
