John,
In recent days, we have heard from multiple state lawmakers facing an alarming rise in threats and harassment. When public servants fear for their safety, our democracy itself is at risk.
Political violence is fundamentally anti-democratic, yet it has been especially prevalent recently. Earlier this year, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a politically-motivated shooting. Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot and wounded. Disturbingly, the gunman carried a hit list of more than 45 state and local officials.
Expressions of sympathy are not enough. That is why we are partnering with the Democracy Security Project to deliver our Legislator Safety Series, which is already underway and provides concrete tools for our alumni in office, including:
- Cyber Safety & Security Training to protect online presence and sensitive data
- Physical Safety & Security Training to implement strategies for personal and team safety
- Long-Range Planning & Scenario Strategy to prepare for complex, high-stakes situations
We only endorse candidates committed to advancing common-sense gun safety legislation. Given the current landscape, those leaders frequently encounter added pressures. These programs equip them to keep pushing for change while staying safe and supported.
The scope of this problem cannot be understated. According to a 2023 report by the Brennan Center for Justice, a shocking 89% of the state legislators surveyed had experienced attacks, harassment, or threats within the last three years. This abuse is disproportionately directed toward women and people of color.
State legislators are the unsung heroes writing and defending laws that shape our daily lives. They are among the most accessible public servants in the country — and that also makes them among the most vulnerable.
In today’s political climate, where threats against state lawmakers are rising at alarming rates, we are standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our network to continue providing the tools, resources, and care our state leaders deserve — so that the best among us are empowered to run, serve, and fight for our democracy.
In solidarity,
Shawn Werner,
Sister District Organizing and Political Director
