Friend,
Big Polluters shouldn’t be allowed at the table when the world comes together to decide how to address the climate crisis that those very polluters caused — and continue to make worse. That’s just common sense. Yet year after year, record numbers of fossil fuel lobbyists1 and other Big Polluters2 have been flooding the climate talks — undermining climate action to protect their own profits at the expense of people and the planet1.
But activists and organizations from around the world have come together to organize through the Kick Big Polluters Out coalition (KBPO) and demand an end to this blatant and destructive conflict of interest. And today we’ve got big news to share! In response to our collective pressure, the U.N. climate treaty is taking the next step towards addressing the influence of Big Polluters at this year's U.N. climate talks coming up in November.
Two years ago, together with KBPO allies, we secured a first step towards unmasking Big Polluters at the climate talks. Everyone who participated had to publicly disclose their affiliations before participating. Today, when confirmation opens for the next round of climate talks happening in Brazil in November, non-government participants will also be expected to reveal who is funding their way at the talks, and to confirm in writing that their objectives at the talks are in alignment with the goals of the U.N. climate treaty and Paris Agreement.
This is a big step toward curbing the influence of Big Polluters at the talks. But we know that we’re still up against some of the biggest and wealthiest corporations in the world. That’s why we’re rallying 100 of our supporters to keep up the pressure and power the movement to kick Big Polluters out through the September Support Drive. When you donate right now, you’ll be supporting the KBPO coalition as we prepare to up the pressure in Brazil, and also help support Global South and frontline KBPO partners in getting to the next climate talks. By making a gift before the September 30 deadline, you’ll also help unlock an additional $10,000 in matching funds – making your support go even further.
