Friend, last week's tragedy at Utah Valley has shaken us all. My heart is with Charlie Kirk's family, the students, and everyone who knew Kirk personally.
Political violence of any kind is absolutely unacceptable. No matter the ideology, it has no place in our nation – none. These actions are a betrayal of the most basic American values, especially free speech and the right to disagree peacefully.
In moments like this, we face a choice: allow grief and fear to deepen partisan divides, or come together to reject violence and reaffirm our shared commitment to democracy.
We faced this choice last July in Pennsylvania, when a gunman shot at and injured President Trump. We faced this choice in April, when the governor‘s residence was firebombed intentionally, in an attempt to injure or kill Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family. We faced this choice twice in the same day this June in Minnesota, when the Speaker of the State House, her husband, and their golden retriever were all gunned down inside their own home, and when a State Senator and his wife were grievously injured by the same assassin.
President Trump has chosen. He has chosen inflaming hostility and encouraging violence upon the “Radical Left”. Ultimately, failing to lead the nation and betraying the trust of his office. By contrast, Governor Cox of Utah has shown what real leadership looks like, urging us to turn away from division and choose a path where politics doesn’t feel like rage.
And just like Governor Cox, I call on every American, in every party, to lower the temperature on our politics. Let us honor our democracy – and the lives touched by this loss – by choosing civility over chaos, and respect over hatred.
Thank you for joining me in condemning this violence.
With resolve,
Dick
