Dear Friend,
The week of September 11th is always a heavy week for Americans. This year it was even more painful. We watched as a young man shared his thoughts about the opportunities and challenges we face as a country in a public square on a university campus. What should have been a beautiful example of what makes America the greatest country in the world turned into a national nightmare.
Charlie’s willingness to go to uncomfortable places and debate those who see the world differently is something I’ve always admired. Especially because I have visited many countries where that kind of dialogue would never happen. Charlie wasn’t inciting violence. He wasn’t making a mockery of people. He wasn’t spewing hate. He was doing what he always did: getting young Americans to think. He started a movement centered on issues that are important to young Americans and to the future of our country.
But, in one split second, an individual took away his Constitutional right – his right to freedom of speech. He did so because he did not like what Charlie had to say. Rather than debating him, he chose to physically silence him. That should shake every American to their core.
Thankfully, the murderer will face justice. But we can never forget what he was trying to do – he wasn’t just trying to take away Charlie’s rights, he was trying to silence all of us. We can’t let that happen. We need to double down and set an example for our children the way Charlie did. Disagreeing with our fellow Americans makes us better; seeing each other as enemies does not.
As UN Ambassador, I witnessed what happens when citizens become so intolerant of their countrymen’s opinions that they lose regard for the value of their life. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, in South Sudan, and in Venezuela, the results of that mindset are chilling. I never thought we would experience it in America. This country should be a pillar of freedom and democracy. We are the envy of the world because of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to work hard and make the best life possible for our families. We all need to decide what we can do to stop the division and get back to our core.
We need to go back to what is right, just, and true – our faith. God gives us challenges to make us better. He reminds us of our blessings, sometimes in painful ways. First and foremost, I ask every single one of you to pray for Erika Kirk and her sweet children. Prayers for strength and prayers for peace in the days ahead. Every American should be united in their support. Right now, we need more prayer, not less, and total divine surrender to get back on track.
At Stand for America, we have always focused on what unites Americans and on emphasizing the values of freedom, capitalism, democracy, and moral clarity. These are difficult times. But I strongly believe that in difficult times we should go back to the basics. That’s what our country was founded on — not just life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness but "hope.” Hope that we could make life better today than it was yesterday. Hope that our best days are ahead of us.
Now, we are at a turning point. Division is not making us a stronger country, it’s destroying us. Our enemies love when we are divided, and they love to exploit it.
In uniting, we can’t ignore hate. We should stand up to it and call it out wherever we see it. There should be zero tolerance for those who celebrate the assassination of a fellow American. As Americans, we have a right to freedom of speech. That does not mean our words don’t have consequences. We should never turn to violence, and there should be clear repercussions for anyone celebrating murder.
I’m confident that together we will find ways to celebrate the blessings of America, to engage in the debate to move forward, and to give our children hope. They should feel safe expressing their opinions freely without fear of death.
This won't change overnight but it will change one person at a time. I have always believed in the goodness of the American people. Sometimes people lose their way but it’s not too late for us to remind the world that we are brothers and sisters, blessed to live in America.
Keep the faith. I have no doubt that our best days are ahead of us. Let's all commit to making that a reality.
My very best,
Nikki
