I never thought I would have to write something like this. But the Supreme Court just ruled that ICE can treat race and ethnicity as a “relevant factor” in deciding who to pick up off the street.

Let’s be clear: this ruling gives ICE license to target Latinos because we are Latinos.

In Trump’s America, that means ICE could use my ethnicity as a reason to detain me — even though I was born here, even though I wore the uniform, and even though I served at the Pentagon.

Justice Sotomayor said it best: this ruling is dangerous, discriminatory, and un-American.

I always knew things were going to get harder for working people in this country. That’s why I’m running for Congress: to fight back against the Trump Administration, ICE, and the dangerous idea that race or ethnicity can ever be used as grounds for detention. 

Yes, our immigration system is broken and needs reform — but America must never become a place where your race determines whether you can be detained.

I know how hard it is for regular people to get a seat at the table or a fair shake. But I’m up for that fight. I believe in an America where the government can’t use race to target you, where families like mine can build a life with dignity — good jobs with living wages, affordable homes, universal healthcare, and childcare that doesn’t break the bank.

To get there, we must elect Democrats who will chart a bold new path for our party — and defeat every single Republican who has threatened our freedoms and pushed our democracy to the brink.
