John,

When Rep. Ben Ray Luján served as chair of the DCCC, part of his strategy for taking back the House meant stifling progressives’ voices and blocking primary challenges against incumbent corporate Democrats.

Now he’s running for U.S. Senate in New Mexico. And — to no one’s surprise — the party establishment is all-in behind him, along with their big donor checks. They thought an early surge of large donations and high-profile endorsements would scare off any progressive challengers. Well, they were wrong.

The Working Families Party is proud to endorse a courageous working families champion for this U.S. Senate seat who won’t be beholden to the corporate establishment: Maggie Toulouse Oliver. She’s a long-time champion for Medicare for All and a Green New Deal (not a recent convert like Rep. Luján). But she is going to need a boost from all of us, right now, in order to compete.

Split a $3 contribution today between her campaign and WFP's New Mexico chapter today. We’re teaming up to go after an entrenched machine and all their advantages, but together we can do this.

We need to take back the U.S. Senate in 2020. But in order to do that, we can’t just sit back and let establishment candidates, hand-picked by the party establishment, waltz to the nomination. That’s not only wrong, it’s risky too.

When we engage in the fight to take back the Senate from Republicans in 2020, we need to show voters across the country that there’s a clear contrast between our side and the billionaire class. We need someone ready to go beyond what the beltway consultants and pollsters say. We need to make sure we go in to 2020 with candidates who voters know will put working families first.

Maggie Toulouse Oliver is exactly that. She is backing ambitious ideas like a Green New Deal and the abolition of ICE. And as Secretary of State, she enacted automatic and same-day voter registration. This is the type of U.S. Senator that New Mexico and America needs. And that’s why we’re making her WFP’s first official U.S. Senate endorsement of 2020. Maggie would also be the first woman to represent New Mexico in the U.S. Senate, so this a historic opportunity on multiple fronts.

We hope you’ll help us kick her campaign off the right way by splitting a $3 contribution. Every individual donation sends a powerful message about where everyday people stand.

It won’t be easy going up against the machine — it never is. But supporting visionary progressives is how we end up with fearless leaders like Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley. It’s a fight worth having. And we are grateful to have you all by our side for it.

In solidarity,

The New Mexico Working Families Party team
