Last month, Donald Trump wasn’t happy with the economy, so he fired the person whose job it is to compile labor statistics. Now, he wants to install a MAGA loyalist who will only put out numbers that make him happy.

This doesn’t just distort our sense of the economy, making it hard to know if we’re in a recession, and how to respond―it threatens our Social Security benefits.

Trump doesn’t want to see economic data that shows that his tariffs are raising prices. So he gets his guy to put his thumb on the scale, and voila―no inflation, even if prices really are rising. If the “official” measure of inflation is off, Social Security’s cost-of-living adjustment fails to keep up. Voila, it’s a de facto benefit cut.
