JOHN, Paul Eaton here. Major General, U.S. Army, retired.

I’ve seen media coverage indicating initial estimates for the cost of Trump’s Department of War rebrand start at around $1 billion.

As someone with decades of service in the Army, I can give you some perspective on cost estimates like that: Whatever the first number is, double it.

It seems leaders like Donald Trump, people who value perception over true force projection, can always find money for their vanity projects. He can find hundreds of millions of dollars to throw himself a birthday party with 5000 Troops and dozens of tanks and helicopters, all at taxpayer expense. One million dollars a day to make National Guard Troops pick up trash on the National Mall in Washington. At least a billion dollars for this rebrand.

However, they can’t afford to hire desperately needed staff at the VA, where Veterans are regularly delayed (or, increasingly, denied) access to care.

But this is not up to Donald Trump. Per the Constitution, Congress still holds the power of the purse, and it would take an act of Congress to turn the Department of Defense into the Department of War. We can still have an impact on that process.

VoteVets is mobilizing our supporters and allies to stop this needless, wasteful rebrand. And to ensure we have the resources needed to defeat this, we’re humbly asking you:

Make a donation to VoteVets and help us stop the Department of War before it starts.
