John —
I cannot overstate how much is at stake in Louisiana v. Callais — the case involving Louisiana’s congressional map in which the Supreme Court will decide whether or not the Voting Rights Act (VRA) is constitutional.
Here’s some background:
In 2022, Louisiana passed a congressional map into law, which allowed Black voters to elect a candidate of their choice in just one of six congressional districts, although Black voters made up a third of the state’s population.
Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, initiated a legal challenge to this gerrymandered congressional map for diluting the voting power of Black Louisiana voters in violation of Section 2 of the VRA. The litigation was successful, and the court required Louisiana to enact a new map that would provide equal access to the political process by including two districts where Black voters could elect candidates of their choice, instead of just one.
Immediately after the enactment of a new map drawn to comply with this court order, the Callais case was filed, and a different federal trial court wrongfully struck down Louisiana’s VRA-compliant map.
On October 15, the fair maps movement will once again argue that Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act is a valid, necessary federal law that not only complies with the U.S. Constitution — it helps fulfill its promise. The Supreme Court must uphold its own precedent in Allen v. Milligan — which upheld Section 2 just three years ago — and protect Louisiana’s VRA-compliant map.
As John Bisognano, President of All On the Line, put it, “If the Court decides to now undo that precedent, it would be a head-spinning reversal of itself. It would also be abundantly clear to the American people — who are increasingly outraged by the targeted discriminatory voting practices underway in Texas and other states — that the Supreme Court’s majority is completely untethered to the reality that everyday Americans live day to day.”
No matter what the Court rules, many maps are in the balance, and we need to be ready to respond. All On The Line continues to mobilize supporters to fight for a truly representative democracy so every eligible voter can make their voices heard. Please make a donation to support this critical work in Louisiana and wherever our rights come under attack.
Thanks so much,
Marina
