In Texas, our movement is fighting like hell to block the state’s new, outrageously and racially gerrymandered congressional map.

Before the map was even signed by the governor, our affiliate filed a lawsuit showing that it is racially discriminatory — a flagrant example of race-based redistricting designed to dilute the power of Black and Latino voters.

How flagrant? To equal the voting power of one white voter in Texas, it would take three Latino voters or five Black voters. Based on their share of the population, Texas Latinos would be the most underrepresented minority in all 50 states.

We’re not going to let this mid-decade racial gerrymander stand without a fight. And their scheme to dilute our voting power won’t stop with Texas, but is rapidly expanding throughout the country. Missouri just passed its own extreme gerrymander, and Ohio will propose its own redraw in a matter of weeks.

Alongside our affiliates, we are doing everything we can to stop this assault on fair representation wherever it arises: in the courtroom, in state houses, or arm-in-arm with communities standing up for fair maps. Here’s why it’s particularly ugly for the Texas legislature to try to roll back the political power of minority voters:

Nearly 60% of Texans are people of color, and 95% of the state’s population growth in the past decade has come from those communities. It seems that some extreme politicians in the state have decided that if they can’t win their support at the polls, they need to slash their voting power instead.
