We’ve all heard the news of the horrific killing of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Kirk family during this time. A family is mourning the horrific loss of a son, husband, and father because of the political violence that plagues our country.
We must look for truth in these moments so that we can move forward together, and not be torn apart by the conspiracies and misinformation that often follow these tragic events.
We must also recognize that this is just the latest in a string of heinous acts of political violence in recent years.
In June, we learned of the horrific assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and of the shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
We’ve witnessed multiple assassination attempts on Donald Trump. Plots to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer. The storming of our nation’s capitol on January 6th. A break-in to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and the brutal attack on her husband.
This sort of violence will continue until all of us, regardless of party, condemn these sorts of heinous actions — no matter where it comes from or who it is directed at.
Because when rhetoric escalates to threats of retribution, history shows us where silence leads.
Democracy requires active protection, through organizing, voting, and speaking out clearly against its threats.
We're going to continue that work here in Wisconsin, and would be honored to have your support in that mission.
Thank you,
