Oklahoma,

This was a tough week for the United States of America. First, we lost a beloved Christian, father, and husband of two, and a hero to many in the conservative movement: Charlie Kirk. Charlie was my friend, and I am devastated that he was taken from us in a senseless act of violence.

Then, on Thursday, we paused to remember the 24th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. Of course, millions more people were forever changed by the horrors of that fateful day. This week is one of reflection.

Charlie Kirk was a titan, a game-changer, and a hero to many. Truly, whether you loved him, or hated him, if you met Charlie, you couldn’t help but like him. He was a God-fearing Christian, a patriot, and a loyal family man who lived his faith every single day. I was proud to call him a friend.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk still hasn’t set in for many of us. It was so senseless, and it hurts that a man with strong Christian, traditional values, who encouraged open political debate was killed simply because an evil person disagreed with him.

Someone tried to silence Charlie, and all they did was make him a martyr. That voice will not be silenced; and it’s on the rest of us to carry his message of God, Family, and Country.

Earlier today, law enforcement in Utah announced they have apprehended the suspected assassin. I am grateful for the local, state, and federal law enforcement partnerships that led to the successful and timely arrest of Charlie Kirk's suspected killer. As my friend, FBI Director Kash Patel said at the press conference, "this is what happens when we let good cops be cops." I pray that all who loved Charlie find peace in his memory, and that justice will be served.

Everyone who is old enough to remember knows exactly where they were on that fateful morning of September 11th, 2001. 9/11 will forever be ingrained in the hearts and memories of Americans. We honor those whose lives were taken 24 years ago and all the first responders who put their lives on the line to save others. We will never forget.

Charlie went everywhere. He'd go where he was not welcome and speak biblical and political truth. He went into the belly of the beast, our college campuses, and would have open dialogue with college students. He was always civil and respectful. Earlier this year, Charlie’s “Prove Me Wrong” debate tour brought him to Oklahoma State University. Charlie even arrived early that day to visit with my wife, Christie, and my kids who gave him a tour of OSU’s campus.

If I had to pick one word to describe Charlie Kirk, LEGEND comes to mind. But if you asked Charlie, he'd simply want to be known as a Christian. He changed the conversation on our campuses, he got people politically involved that would never be involved, and he made drastic changes in his 31 years of life. On Thursday, I joined Kristen Welker of NBC News to discuss Charlie’s outstanding life and his important legacy.
