I’ve often said that First Things is “more than a magazine.” By that I usually mean that the magazine is just one of the many programs we provide. There’s also the website, our podcast, the annual Erasmus Lecture, our Intellectual Retreat program, the Junior Fellows program, Evangelicals and Catholics Together . . . and a host of other events, lectures, and colloquia we bring to readers like you each year. I hope that you’ve participated in at least one of these programs and would invite you to please get involved if you have not!

But there’s another sense in which First Things is more than a magazine—you see, we’re a magazine with a mission. First Things is not neutral. We believe that religion has something to tell us about our humanity and the proper ordering of public life. We believe that the first things must remain first.

The late Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor once wrote about the need to exaggerate her characters so that a modern audience numb to their eccentricities would be able to recognize their strangeness. “To the hard of hearing, you shout,” she said, “and for the almost blind you draw large and startling figures.” Today more than ever we face a world that is hard of hearing and almost blind. Let us together raise our voices and speak clearly in support of eternal truths.
