We’ve been hard at work with our Chapters and coalition partners to legalize housing throughout California. Too often, zoning laws make it illegal to build multifamily housing such as apartments, townhomes, and duplexes, leading to the housing crisis we’re currently facing, where so many of us struggle to find an affordable home. But every day, YIMBYs are fighting to be the change, and we’ve just won big. Our YIMBY housing champion Senator Scott Wiener’s bill to allow more housing near transit stations has been passed by the legislature and currently awaits the Governor’s signature!
Here’s what SB 79 does:
Legalizes hundreds of thousands of new homes, up to 6-7 stories, within half a mile of transit stations, depending on how frequently transit runs at the station and how many people live in the city.
This was a hard-fought win as this bill faced high hurdles at every turn, but we overcame them with your help. Together, we made over 2,000 phone calls and hosted a dozen meetings with legislators that helped make the difference for this bill! We're hard at work to pass similar bills throughout the country.
