Advent Studies to Inspire Worship & Justice
Advent is a season of waiting, wonder, and preparing to welcome Christ anew. The United Methodist General Commission On Religion and Race is excited to offer three resources to support you and your congregation as you proclaim hope, peace, joy, and love in a world longing for justice.
- Seeking Jesus: The Advent of Justice and Peace: A 5-week worship and children’s resource that connects the Advent story with the call to confront racism, inequity, and division. Includes sermon notes, liturgies, hymns, and children’s activities to help communities become “co-creators with God of a world where racial and other injustices are confronted.” https://www.r2hub.org/premium-resources/p/seeking-jesus-the-advent-of-justice-and-peace.
- Reimagine Advent: Discover the Liberating Christ: Written by Rev. Dr. B. Yuki Schwartz, this resource invites churches to see Jesus through the eyes of the marginalized — challenging “colonized” versions of the Christmas story and opening space for liberating joy. It features A Colonized Christmas by the Rev. Dr. Miguel de la Torre, a powerful reflection that unmasks the radical, justice-oriented meaning of Christ’s birth. Includes sermon starters, litanies, global hymns, and hands-on ideas for children. https://www.r2hub.org/premium-resources/p/reimagine-advent-discover-the-liberating-christ.
- God With Us: Advent Promises for a Just World: A free Advent study that pairs lectionary scripture with justice-centered reflection, discussion, and ritual, equipping churches to embody God’s presence in a fractured world. In addition to study and worship materials, the resource includes children’s activities that help young disciples connect with Advent themes in meaningful ways. https://www.r2hub.org/library/god-with-us-advent-promises-for-a-just-world-year-c.
