In Loving Memory of River Wilson From Capitol Hill to the District Weekly Digest | This month began on a solemn note, as I met with the family of River Wilson, a Bronx 20-month-old who tragically drowned in a swimming pool at a residential daycare facility. In her memory, and in consultation with her family, I announced the introduction of River’s Law, which would prohibit the operation of swimming pools at residential childcare facilities and require that alarms be installed on all doors and windows, to ensure that such a devastating tragedy never happens again. | D.C. Updates Housing Affordability Summit Families across the Bronx are being squeezed by skyrocketing rents, rising home prices, and increasing homelessness—putting the American Dream out of reach for many. Housing is now one of the biggest pressures on family budgets. I was therefore proud to participate in Congressman Jimmy Gomez's Housing Affordability Summit, which brought together lawmakers, advocates, and labor and industry leaders to forge bold, united solutions. The goal: lower housing costs, protect renters, and ensure every family has a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. | National African Immigrant Heritage Month I was proud to join Rep. Yvette Clarke in introducing a resolution to establish September as National African Immigrant Heritage Month. From classrooms and hospitals to small businesses and public service, African immigrant communities are deeply woven into America’s story. Here in New York City, their vibrant cultures and contributions enrich our neighborhoods every day. This resolution is about honoring that legacy and creating a national month of recognition, celebration, and unity. Audience with Pope Leo XIV I had the distinct honor of being granted an audience with Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican last month. The audience came at the end of a Congressional Delegation mission to Italy, Tunisia, and Morocco. The mission was focused on prioritizing regional support in collaboration with European partners and fostering broader global partnerships. | District Events I was honored to attend the first service of Rev. Dr. Alpher K. Sylvester at Butler Memorial Methodist Church and to welcome him to this new chapter of leadership and faith. | I was proud to attend the Clay Avenue Senior Resource Fair to connect with seniors, share resources, and ensure our community’s elders have the support they deserve. | I had a blast celebrating Morris Houses Family Day with residents, families, and friends—coming together to honor community, connection, and joy in the Bronx. | Wishing everyone a great weekend and looking forward to the week to come! As always, my office is available for constituents in need of support.
