Recent Homebuyers Face Highest Mortgage Payments in Nearly Two Decades

Recent homebuyers in 2024 faced higher mortgage payments than those who moved into homes three years earlier, despite living in lower-valued homes, according to the Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates released this week.

Mortgage payments continued to rise for the most recent movers in 2024, while remaining flat for homeowners who last moved in 2021 or earlier, creating a record gap between the two groups.

Uninsured Rates Up in 18 States and District of Columbia

The uninsured rate increased in 18 states and the District of Columbia between 2023 and 2024, according to a brief on the 2024 American Community Survey 1-year estimates.

What is contributing to the increase?

A drop in "public" health coverage, most notably Medicaid, according to data from the 2024 ACS that reports health insurance coverage at the time the survey is taken.

Nearly a Quarter of Homeowners Paid Condo or HOA Fees in 2024

Around 21.6 million of the nation’s 86.6 million owned households in the United States paid either a condo or homeowners association (HOA) fee in 2024, according to the 2024 American Community Survey 1-year estimates.

The ACS has long asked about condo fees. But the 2024 ACS 1-year estimates include information on condo and homeowners who paid HOA fees, too.
