John,

Three months ago, my friend and Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman — the most consequential Speaker in state history — was murdered alongside her husband, Mark, at their home in a despicable act of political violence targeting Democratic lawmakers.

Last month, a community in Minneapolis was shattered by a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School, where a church filled with schoolchildren attending mass became another scene of unspeakable tragedy.

And yesterday, an open forum for political dialogue and disagreement was upended by a horrific act of targeted violence when political activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed. Just moments after this assassination took place on the University of Utah campus, news broke of the latest school shooting, this time at a high school near Denver, Colorado.

In America, we don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint. The proliferation of mass shootings and political violence across this country cannot continue to go unaddressed. We cannot continue down this path, John.

That’s why I’m calling on our state legislature to put gun safety on the agenda. The time is now. Minnesotans deserve to know where their lawmakers stand when it comes to keeping our communities safe. Will you join me?

Our plan will include banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines that are so often used to carry out these distributing acts. These are weapons of war — and they have no place in our schools, our churches, or our neighborhoods.

But I can’t do this alone.

Year after year, there have been more mass shootings in the U.S. than days in the year, as this epidemic has gone unaddressed by those in Washington for decades.

We need to show them that Minnesotans are watching, and we will not accept more thoughts and prayers without action.

Stand with me to demand the Minnesota legislature pass common-sense gun safety laws: add your name now.

Every signature matters. Every voice raised makes it harder for lawmakers to ignore the truth: We can save lives, but only if we have the courage to act.

Thank you for standing with me,

Governor Tim Walz
