John,
I didn’t intend to make this speech — but I had to say something.
The House was discussing amendments to the annual defense spending bill. I was preparing to speak in favor of a bipartisan bill that supports childcare, housing, and healthcare for all those who serve in our Armed Forces and their families.
But then a person who represents South Carolina introduced several amendments that serve no purpose other than attacking and dehumanizing trans people.
This person introduced those amendments using disgusting, hateful, violent language that I will not repeat.
So, when it was my turn to speak, I addressed that person from South Carolina* and their unhinged vendetta against our trans neighbors.

(*In my speech, I mistakenly said this person was from “North Carolina.” I apologize – I don’t believe in referring to someone in a way that ignores their identity.)
This was not the first time this person has attacked the rights and dignity of trans children, parents, servicemembers, and military personnel.
They have made their bigotry a central feature of their political brand, from their speeches to the bills they introduce to their campaign merchandise.
I ran for Congress to bring your voices to Capitol Hill. I will continue to use my voice to call out bigotry, hate, and violent threats to my neighbors.
Thank you for your support 💙
– Emily
