John,

There are unsung heroes across the country who work hard every day to ensure kids can access the most important school supply — the food they need to grow, learn and thrive.

Frances Montoya-Gatewood experienced hunger herself growing up. Now, as food service director at Vaughn Next Century Learning Center in California, she and her team drive over 50 miles every morning to serve breakfast to kids at school.

“Breakfast is important for kids; feeding the brain helps them concentrate. You know, they're comfortable, they're in a good mood,” Frances says.

Chef Reggie

At Fulton County school district in Georgia, Chef Reggie sometimes dresses up as Spider-Man or a watermelon to make the kids happy in addition to ensuring they have the food they need to thrive. He grew up in the district himself and sees showing care and love for kids as part of his job as district chef.

“Join me for lunch. Please, join me … You will see how much the kids love it,” Chef Reggie says.

Candy Biehle is a school child-nutrition director in Smithville, Texas, who organizes after-school meals and provides essential opportunities for kids to continue learning in their community. Recently, the kids put on the chef’s hat themselves to learn how to make spaghetti squash.

“It is about giving students a new experience with things they may have never tried,” says Candy. “These are kids who don't normally get the opportunity to try and experience some … foods.”
