Hey John,
Below is a message from the Tennessee House Democratic Caucus. It shares their perspective on the Tennessee National Guard deployment to Washington, D.C., and on SNAP in Tennessee, including hot food waivers, work requirements, and what policy changes could mean for families and local retailers. When you have a minute, please read on.
With gratitude,
Andy

John,
Governor Bill Lee just yanked 160 Tennessee National Guard personnel away from their families and their jobs and sent them to Washington, D.C. These brave Tennesseans are being used as political pawns, rather than being reserved for the life-saving and emergency response functions for which they were trained. None of these individuals volunteered to participate in Donald Trump’s militarization of our nation’s capital.
Donald Trump and Bill Lee’s willingness to abuse their power is threatening American citizens in one of our country’s most beautiful cities, causing personal hardships for Guard personnel, and costing Tennessee taxpayers millions of dollars.
Meanwhile back home, Bill Lee is begging Donald Trump for exemptions just to allow working Tennesseans to buy hot food with their SNAP benefits. That’s right: Tennesseans need a federal waiver to buy a rotisserie chicken.
Tennessee families rely on SNAP just to put food on the table—an average of $118.21 million in benefits are distributed monthly across the state and accepted by over 6,600 food retailers. SNAP dollars don’t just feed families—they support farmers, truck drivers, grocers, and local economies. Now, Republican work requirements are set to slash those benefits by 20%—a $250 million cut that will push more families into food insecurity. It’s outrageous.
We MUST fight back. Troops in American streets and depriving families and children of food is not normal, and we cannot allow it to be normalized.
Your donation is your voice—a voice for working families, for hungry children, for forgotten communities. Help us stop the GOP’s cruel cuts to the programs on which Tennesseans depend. Chip in $20 right now to shift our focus from political stunts with our state troops to fighting the real battle—the battle against hunger in our state.
