We with 350 Eastside stand with those who are protesting in the streets struggling for racial justice and fighting against racism and white supremacy in our culture and institutions. We declare that Black lives matter.
We share the grief and outrage over the violent murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade as well as the many unarmed Black, Brown, and Indigenous people who have died at the hands of those we have entrusted to provide fair and equal protection under the law.
Environmental justice cannot be achieved without racial justice. 350 Eastside is committed to stand up against anti-black racism and to work for racial justice for all people, which is the work of environmental justice, environmental justice cannot be achieved without racial justice.
As the leadership of 350 Eastside endeavors to do the work of environmental justice, we commit to:
· Looking deeply at the racism within each of us and beginning or continuing a journey to walk in this world in a way that helps to undo rather than uphold racist systems.
· Doing our own personal work to learn about the history of how racism has been intentionally put into place and how we are unintentionally upholding these racist systems.
· Reflecting on how our silence and/or inaction contributes to the perpetuation of racism and taking action to dismantle the racist systems that are upholding racism.
· Analyzing how white supremacy shows up in the culture of our work so that we can make changes that will allow us to effectively invite, welcome and sustain participation from all people.
· Looking at the history of the ownership of the land here on the Eastside of Lake Washington in relation to Indigenous people. Acknowledging the wrongs that were done and work to correct these injustices.
· Actively engaging in listening and learning to understand how we can best contribute to our collective work for racial and environmental justice.
We invite you to join us in this work,
Emily, Lin, Lynn, Marilyn, Phil, and Sara
