Devastating disclosure: 12 babies born alive after abortion in Ireland in one year
The Pro Life Campaign, in a press statement yesterday, described as a “deeply concerning humanitarian issue” the evidence that has emerged regarding the number of babies who are born alive in Irish hospitals after abortion, and the questions it raises about the standard of medical care they subsequently receive.
In response to a recent parliamentary question submitted by Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn, the HSE has revealed that 12 babies were born alive following abortion and died soon afterwards in the year 2022 alone. It is likely that similar numbers of babies were born alive after abortion in the years not covered in the HSE’s response. The figures for the number of babies born alive after abortion are based on a series of annual reports published by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC).
In the statement responding to the latest deeply troubling revelations, Pro Life Campaign spokesperson Eilís Mulroy said: “It is truly shocking to learn that so many babies have been born alive after abortion in Ireland and that there isn’t clarity about what so-called ‘comfort care’ means and what standard of medical care is being provided to these babies. Indeed, in some cases doctors subject unborn babies to feticide, a procedure involving a lethal injection in the baby’s heart, to make sure a baby near full-term is not born alive.”
Ms Mulroy continued: “Back in 2018 soon after the abortion referendum, the then Minister for Health Simon Harris accused TDs in the Dáil of resorting to “shock tactics” for raising concerns about babies being born alive after abortion and the care they might receive. We now know that the concerns raised are grounded in harsh reality and should not have been dismissed.”
Deputy Ken O’Flynn, who submitted the parliamentary question on the issue, said in response to the HSE’s reply: “It is hard to fathom that babies are being born alive after abortions in Ireland and sadly you have to go round in circles just to get answers as to how the babies are treated once they come into this world. There needs to be a lot more openness surrounding the medical care given to or withheld from the babies in these appalling situations. The answer to my parliamentary question should serve as the beginning, not the end, of the flow of information.”

Media regulator gives official seal of approval to yet another biased programme
It will likely come as little surprise to readers of Vital Signs that Ireland’s media regulator Coimisiún na Meán has just dismissed the Pro Life Campaign’s complaint regarding the recent crass and deeply offensive segment on abortion that Virgin Media’s Ireland AM programme ran with.
The offending broadcast featured Ireland AM presenters Muireann O’Connell and Tommy Bowe joking and laughing about the abortion issue with studio guest, comedian Katie Boyle, who talked about her abortion experience in the US and how she’s using comedy to “break the stigma” surrounding the issue.
The programme also aired historical inaccuracies that the presenters never bothered to challenge, including falsehoods about Saint Brigid and abortion.
Coimisiún na Meán receives millions of euro of taxpayers’ money every year to serve as a protector of balance and fairness in the media - but instead of doing its job - it’s effectively acting as a gatekeeper for biased one-sided current affairs coverage in Ireland.
In a separate decision earlier this year, Coimisiún na Meán gave the thumbs-up to an RTÉ Investigates programme on abortion which aired for an hour and five minutes in a prime-time slot, where viewers were subjected to a parade of abortion advocates, with not a single pro-life representative interviewed.
Because Coimisiún na Meán operates within the same ideological bubble as much of the mainstream media, the result is always the same: RTÉ or say Newstalk produces biased content - Coimisiún na Meán protects it - and the public is left powerless in securing accountability.
With the public’s money, Coimisiún na Meán acts both as the country’s media regulator and as the body responsible for allocating millions of euro to news organisations across the country for designated projects. How can the organisation tasked with upholding trust, accountability and independence in the media also serve as a partial source of funding for those same outlets? This isn’t merely problematic - it’s a glaring conflict of interest. Indeed, it should terrify anyone who values a free and open society.
If there is to be even the slightest rebuilding of trust in the mainstream media, the Oireachtas must take an in-depth look at Coimisiún na Meán’s remit and how it is operating. As concerned citizens, we must generate an unrelenting push until it happens.

FF presidential candidate Jim Gavin declares his support for abortion
It was a sad sight watching newly nominated Fianna Fáil presidential candidate Jim Gavin (pictured above) endorsing Ireland’s new abortion law at his very first press encounter after being selected on Tuesday
With 1 in 6 babies’ lives in Ireland now ending in abortion, and so many women living with abortion regret, it’s troubling that none of the currently nominated presidential candidates stand for protecting both women and their babies.
Maria Steen appears to be the only openly pro-life person still pursuing a nomination and we wish her well in the coming days.
The Presidential Election takes place on 24th October, and the nomination period lasts until 12 noon on 24th September.

Charlie Kirk RIP (1993-2025)
Our deepest sympathies are with the family of activist and social media influencer Charlie Kirk, who was brutally murdered on Wednesday during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. Charlie was a sincere and eloquent advocate for the pro-life cause, deeply committed to humanity and the flourishing of all people.
Although he held some political positions that many would not share, few could deny the conviction with which he lived and the compassion that guided his work. His senseless murder has cast a long shadow over the country he cherished so much. We pray that his death will not be in vain, and that his homeland will take to heart his example of trying to foster dialogue rather than division. We extend our condolences to his wife Erika and his two young children who bear the weight of such unimaginable grief. We also pray for peace in the United States and an end to political violence in all its forms.
Superb turnout at March for Life in London
Around 10,000 people marched through Central London on Saturday, calling for an end to abortion in the UK.
Supporters rallied under the banner “Human Rights for All Humans”, showing solidarity with the unborn, their parents, and those who pray or offer support outside abortion facilities.
March for Life UK co-director Isabel Vaughan-Spruce welcomed the diverse gathering, saying it was a sign that people are “recognising the value of every life from conception.” She added that the event was marked by “the peace and joy of those confident that their cause is just, and their hope rooted in something greater than politics.”
Addressing the crowd, Northern Ireland MP Carla Lockhart stressed: “If human rights mean anything they must be consistent, they must apply to all. If we are to see change, we must each play our part.”
It’s tremendous to see the crowds growing every year at the march through London.
