There is not a single day in my life as an American when I am not painfully aware of the toll gun violence takes on our communities.
Yesterday’s shooting at Evergreen High School shook Colorado to its core and broke my heart. It brought me right back to that awful day in 1999, when I sat in my office in the Longworth House Office Building watching the horror of Columbine unfold in our district. In 2012, when a shooter murdered twelve people in a theater in Aurora, my own daughter’s close friend was in the theater next door. I will never forget the weight of those moments, and I feel them all over again each time another tragedy strikes.
Gun violence does not care about ideology, age, race, or religion. It steals lives indiscriminately, leaving devastation behind every single time. Families, classmates, and entire communities carry the lived traumas of gun violence for the rest of their lives.
I am angry. And I am enraged that our news cycle is still dominated by a relentless pattern of massacres and completely preventable shootings.
As your representative, I have never been afraid to stand up to gun lobbyists, special interest groups, or extremist members of Congress. I have fought for an assault weapons ban, red flag laws, and common-sense reforms, no matter who tried to silence me.
I will not give up. Protecting our children, our families, and our communities is the most sacred duty of public service. Ending this epidemic will take more than one bill or one moment of outrage. It will take unwavering commitment and relentless action. I am ready to do everything in my power to pass stronger gun safety laws and put an end to this cycle of violence.
