The Open Markets Institute and ARTICLE 19 are convening a high-level two-day conference of leading thinkers, lawmakers, technologists, and advocates to discuss the direct and growing threats to our democracies and basic liberties posed by today’s dominant online communications platforms, the rise of AI, and interference by foreign states. We will be joined by Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa; former Italian President Mario Monti; former EVP of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager; and Jamie Raskin, ranking member of House Judiciary, among many other leading voices. Michael McGrath, the Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, will be representing the European Commission. This conference could not be timelier. In many ways, the fight to protect freedom of speech and thought online is key to prevailing in today’s great battle for democracy. As the New York Times put it recently: “Trump Wants Europe to Stop Regulating Big Tech: Will it Bend?” Join us in Brussels on 15 October at the Residence Palace and on 16 October at the European Parliament to hear some of the world’s leading voices come together to discuss how to collectively understand and counter these threats. Confirmed speakers include: Maria Ressa (journalist, Winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize) Additional participants to be added. |
