Hello, Friends—

The ‘Dog Days of Summer’ are here — another great reason to visit our beautiful beaches before school begins. I’m still in the District, meeting with you, and enjoying the last days of summer.

NewsRadio Townhall

On Monday, I enjoyed a robust townhall discussion on NewsRadio 92.3 FM. If you weren’t able to tune in, we discussed various issues facing Congress, including legislation on firearms that the House Judiciary Committee will consider soon.

Instead of taking radical measures to ban guns and infringe on American citizens’ Second Amendment rights, we must address issues upstream, and focus on mental health, encouraging healthy families, and raising children to be moral, engaged members of our communities. Legislation that does nothing other than strip away rights from law-abiding citizens is bad legislation, and I will keep fighting in the Judiciary Committee for your God-given rights.

Hurricane Preparedness

We are halfway through Florida’s hurricane season in Florida. Even though this season has been mild, that can change rapidly. There is no better time than the present to prepare for future storms. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael, I can’t emphasize enough the need to be ready and prepared if another disaster strikes.

Here are a few tips to get started:

  1. Talk with household members about what to do if a hurricane strikes and create an evacuation plan.
  2. Build an emergency kit in an easy-to-carry container with items including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit, etc.
  3. Be informed. Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan.

Northwest Florida is strong, and I’m proud that we’ve rebounded quickly from past storms. Nevertheless, we must always be prepared, and we must do what we can to ensure that coming storms have a minimal impact on our families, our homes, and our communities.

Clean Energy Solutions

I recently sat on a panel to discuss clean energy, and other innovation-focused strategies to mitigate climate change. Instead of adding more burdensome, job-killing regulations, I’m working towards finding practical, market-based solutions to the most pressing problems facing our environment. That’s why I released the ‘Green Real Deal’ back in April.

Our military has stated that climate change affects its operations, from basing decisions, to facility maintenance, and more. If we respond to climate change in the right way — as opposed to the top-down, big-government approach of the ‘Green New Deal’ — we can create jobs, avoid unnecessary foreign entanglements, increase our military readiness, and keep our beaches from being destroyed. Sounds like a win all around!

Improving Transparency for Student Loans

Last week, I introduced a bipartisan bill called the Student Loan Disclosure Transparency Act, alongside my friend (and fellow Floridian) Rep. Donna Shalala (D-FL). This legislation will greatly increase transparency for those seeking to take out student loans. Making borrowers more aware of the financial burden they are taking on is a small step towards reducing America’s vast student loan debt, which is currently over $1.6 trillion. If we don’t encourage fiscal responsibility in borrowers, that number will continue skyrocketing.

I’m proud to have introduced this bipartisan legislation, and I’m confident my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will quickly support it.

Op-Ed: Rep. Matt Gaetz: Google’s information dominance is dangerous — especially when it comes to voters

“Google puts its thumb on the scale for search results the moment someone starts typing. Prior to the 2016 election, Google’s ‘autocomplete’ function rarely filled in negative queries about Hillary Clinton (though it did with Trump).”

A show of bipartisanship to address big student loan debt crisis

“It’s not every day that Democratic U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala and Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz agree on a public policy issue, so it was good to see some bipartisanship on dealing with the student loan debt crisis.”
