Hi Friends of 5 Gyres,
Last month, our team traveled to Geneva, Switzerland for the final round of Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, hopeful that the world would take a historic step toward a strong, binding agreement. We advocated for a treaty that prioritizes production reduction and reuse systems - critical steps toward a future where our communities, connected waterways, and health are protected from the growing harms of plastic pollution.
Instead, we returned home with disappointment and no treaty.
But the fight isn’t over. The science is clear, and so is our commitment to a treaty that protects people and planet. In our latest newsroom article, 5 Gyres’ Co-founder and Researcher Dr. Marcus Eriksen shares his reflections. Plus, join our upcoming webinar happening tomorrow (September 11) for deeper insights from fellow members of the Scientists’ Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty into what happened at INC-5.2 and what comes next as we look to the future.
