Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week But first...
Today at Prime Minister’s Questions Sir Keir Starmer said the UK’s “employment rate is up, inactivity is down and we’ve created over 380,000 jobs since we’ve been in power”.

In contrast, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has repeatedly claimed that under Labour unemployment has “gone up every single month”.

So who is right?

On these specific claims, Mr Starmer is correct and Ms Badenoch is incorrect. But measuring unemployment and jobs isn’t as straightforward as it looks. While it may sound contradictory, it’s true, for example, that so far under Labour the number of both employed and unemployed people has risen, and the rate of both employment and unemployment has increased too. For more detailed analysis see our explainer on how to accurately measure and communicate these figures.

Reform UK conference fact checked: vaccine and immigration claims

Reform UK’s party conference took place last weekend. We monitored the conference for claims to check, as we will for the other major party conferences in the coming weeks. Here’s what we found:

A cardiologist called Dr Aseem Malhotra (above), who we have fact checked before, made a series of claims about Covid vaccines, from causing cancer in the Royal Family to their general safety.

We also heard claims about the number of people in the UK illegally. Read our analysis.

Photos of recent Banksy mural edited to feature England flags

The recent Banksy mural outside the Royal Courts of Justice may now be (partly) removed, two days after it was put up, but it has taken on a new lease of life online, through edited photos, presented as the original.

We have published a number of flag-themed fact checks recently. You can read them all here.

What is a ‘gallbladder flush’, and does it actually remove gallstones from the body?

A ‘liver and gallbladder flush’ involves drinking olive oil and eating apples—or similar variations—and there are claims it can “flush out” gallbladder stones.

This is not a proven treatment. The stones “flushed” out of a person’s body are unlikely to be gallstones, and research has demonstrated that they’re probably created by the “flush” diet itself.
