** No Funds for Trumpism!
------------------------------------------------------------

As the MAGA Regime continues its relentless assault on our democracy and the Supreme Court continues its erosion of our Constitutional protections against autocracy, the budget battle rages in Congress.

Trump and the MAGA Regime are waging an ongoing anti-Constitutional coup through executive action and legislative malfeasance. In a very real sense, Democrats who vote to fund the MAGA Regime violate their oath to uphold the US Constitution. They must stop funding a government that is being twisted into a tool for political oppression, illegal seizure of power, and private enrichment by Trump and his cronies.

Democratic Party leaders like Schumer and Jeffries wring their hands and bemoan that they are powerless to defend us because the Republicans control the White House, both chambers of Congress, and the Supreme Court. Not so!

Democrats still have some power over the purse. If Democrats hold firm, they can still block passage of the appropriation bills needed to fund the federal government. And at the very minimum they can force Republicans to vote on the record as they slash, cut, destroy – and self-enrich – so we can hold them accountable in 2026.

All indications are that Congress is deadlocked. If the 12 appropriation bills are not passed by the end of this month, large portions of the federal government will shut down – unless Congress passes a temporary Continuing Resolution (CR) to continue spending at current levels.

Last March, Schumer (D-NY) led ten Democratic senators to vote for a CR to fund the Trump government, which resulted in billion-dollar cuts to social spending. Had Schumer not done so, there would have been a shutdown. A shutdown would have created a serious economic and political crisis. One that Democrats could have used to mobilize public opinion against the MAGA Regime. But that did not happen, so the Trump juggernaut continues to wreck, trample, and corrupt unchecked and un-deterred.

Contact Members of Congress and tell them: No money for Trumpism! ([link removed])

** Tell Gov. Newsom and Your Assembly Member: Pass LGBTQ+ Non-Discrimination Laws this Year
------------------------------------------------------------

It’s the final stretch. Call your legislators TODAY!

Republicans are busy rolling back federal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people, so it is important that we in California pass our own.

As well as the privacy bills from the LGBTQ+ call to action last week ([link removed]) , we must pass these non-discrimination bills bills on the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus's agenda:
* AB 554: The PrEPARE Act (Gonzalez). Ensures the availability of PrEP medications (which prevent HIV), even if the Republican Administration attacks access at the federal level.
* AB 678: LGBT-safe homeless services (Lee). The Republican Administration has effectively ended protections for LGBTQ+ homeless people, so California needs to implement those protections.
* SB 418: Ensure Equal Access to Care for All (Menjivar). Requires health insurance nondiscrimination for LGBTQ+ patients and stockpiling of hormone therapy.
* SB 450: LGBTQ+ Adoption Protections (Menjivar). Allows LGBTQ+ parents to adopt California-born kids from any state.
* SB 590: Found family leave (Durazo). Makes anybody caring for a seriously ill loved one eligible for wage compensation under California’s Paid Family Leave Program, whether or not they are biological relatives.

Given how quickly the Trump administration has moved, vulnerable communities (including members of Indivisible SF) can't wait another year for these bills to pass.
1. Call your representatives ASAP, as they must pass these bills by Sept 12.
2. Governor Newsom has until Oct 12 to sign or veto each bill. Given hisinfluence on the legislature ([link removed]) and hisunreliability on trans rights ([link removed]) , we need him to know we’re watching so he’ll be motivated to do the right thing.

** Gov. Newsom: Sign AB 49 and Keep Our School Children Safe from Federal Raids
------------------------------------------------------------

**
------------------------------------------------------------

AB 49 reinforces California’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of immigration status, has access to a safe and welcoming learning environment. It upholds the constitutional right to public education for all students, as affirmed in Plyler v. Doe (1982), and aligns with our state’s values of equity and inclusion.

This bill is especially urgent given that nearly 20% of California’s K–12 students are undocumented or live in mixed-status households. AB 49 provides critical protections for these students and their families by safeguarding their personal information and limiting the presence of immigration enforcement on school grounds.

The bill is now on Governor Newsom’s desk. Contact him and urge him to sign it! ([link removed])

** America Must Keep Its Promise: Support the Dream & Promise Act
------------------------------------------------------------

From People Power United ([link removed]) : “Dreamers, TPS holders, and immigrant families are living in fear because Congress has failed to act—while the Trump administration escalates state-sanctioned terror with raids, detentions, and fearmongering.

“The American Dream and Promise Act is our chance to change that. This bill would create a real path to citizenship for more than 4.4 million of our neighbors—people who contribute to our communities, our economy, and our shared future every single day.

“It’s time for Congress to deliver on its promises: pass the Dream and Promise Act and give immigrant families the safety and stability they deserve.”

Contact your Members of Congress and tell them: pass the Dream and Promises Act! ([link removed])

** Stop Trump’s illegal deportations and renditions to foreign prisons! Free Kilmar Abrego Garcia from ICE detention
------------------------------------------------------------

From People Power United:

“Our Members of Congress must uphold constitutional protections and put an end to unlawful deportation practices. Due process is a fundamental right, and under the Constitution, citizens and immigrants are protected. By highlighting the abuse of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who has been denied his legal rights and targeted for punitive detention, the message calls for immediate accountability. It is a plea for justice and a broader call to defend human rights and the rule of law.”

Contact your Members of Congress and tell them: Stop illegal deportations! ([link removed])

** People power matters: Immigrant Children Saved from Deportation
------------------------------------------------------------

In the last week of August, ICE pulled together a stealth plan to deport unaccompanied immigrant children from Guatemala. These children were living in shelters while they awaited hearings on their status. On Friday, August 29, rumors reached staff at many of the shelters that within a few days, children in their custody would be removed in the middle of the night.Lawyers representing individual children knew something was wrong when they checked their client’s hearing date, only to discover it had been removed from the court calendar.

Some of these people contacted others in their networks. By Friday morning CNN broke the story. Within hours, lawyers and staff from multiple organizations had convened meetings to try to stop the deportation. Advocates went without sleep that night and worked all the next day so that the National Immigration Law Center could file an emergency motion at around 1 AM Sunday.Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan (US District for District of Columbia) issued a temporary restraining order that blocked ICE from deporting these children.

Still, armed ICE officers in flak jackets entered the shelters, woke sleeping children, and took them away. The judge’s order was barely in time–dozens of children had already been boarded onto chartered planes.

This rescue began with one, two, or three people questioning a wrong instead of simply obeying orders.

Start thinking that every single thing you can do to resist DOES matter.

** Trump Slices up USAID and the Media Stays Silent
------------------------------------------------------------

As Trump’s slash-and-burn brand of government blunders its way toward the abyss, one of his early catastrophes has faded from memory. Dismantling the US Agency for International Development (USAID) happened so fast it had a blink-and-you’d-miss-it unreality. Staff fired, lifesaving programs halted mid-stream and lettering pulled off the headquarters building in Washington. Elon Musk and his juvenile band of DOGE thugs spearheaded the mutilation, calling the agency “a criminal organization” and “beyond repair.”

A review of USAID’s work tells a different story; what’s been lost with the agency’s demise is massive. And those losses impact not only faraway countries and populations that many of us may never experience, but also lives and livelihoods right here in the US. We need the media to step up and make the public aware of what’s been lost with the destruction of USAID.

Pressuring corporations, especially media corporations, is an important tool in your toolkit as a citizen.

Contact your favorite media outlet ([link removed]) and tell them to report on USAID.

And meanwhile, here’s an example of a media outlet doing good work:

** Support Mission Local’s coverage of ICE activity
------------------------------------------------------------

Mission Local has provided exceptional coverage of ICE activity in our city. They're raising $300,000 to continue this work, specifically so they can "hire a full-time immigration reporter for the next three years and four months of Trump’s term." Consider donating to Mission Local ([link removed]) .

** Postcard Opportunity: GOTV for Pennsylvania’s Pro-Democracy Supreme Court Justices
------------------------------------------------------------

This November, Pennsylvania will have a retention election for State Supreme Court Justices David N. Wecht, Christine L. Donohue, and Kevin M. Dougherty. Since Pennsylvania judges are not allowed to campaign for themselves, we need to help these three Democratic judges in their reelection bids.

Currently the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has a Democratic majority, which would end if these justices lost. MAGA is doing its utmost to make that happen, relentlessly attacking them. The Democrats are losing this essential race.

If these three judges are removed, there will be a tremendous political impact outside Pennsylvania, because a pro-MAGA court could swing electoral votes to the Republicans by aiding MAGA in restricting voter rights. Nineteen electoral college votes are in the balance.

Activate America has a postcard-writing campaign to GOTV and encourage Pennsylvanians to vote by mail in the upcoming election. See their campaign here. ([link removed])
