! URGENT ACTION ALERT !

Dear John,

There is now just 2 days left to have your say on the new Baby Loss Certificate Scheme for Northern Ireland.

This scheme is intended to provide formal recognition for parents who experience the heartbreaking loss of a baby before the 24th week of pregnancy. This is an important step towards acknowledging the existence and value of every unborn baby.

However, the consultation makes no mention of women who are grieving after an abortion. Their grief and loss are just as real, and it is vital that babies lost through abortion are also recognised and acknowledged.

⏰ The consultation closes on Friday 12th September at 4pm. If you haven’t yet responded, please don’t miss this opportunity to speak up. Your voice is essential in ensuring that ALL WOMEN who experience the loss of a baby — including after abortion — are recognised with dignity and compassion; and that EVERY UNBORN CHILD is recognised as precious, worthy, and a valued member of the human family.

Baby Loss Certificate Scheme - Public Consultation

Most of the questions are general and can be answered based on your own personal views and experiences.

However, we encourage you to focus on Part 6 – “Other comments or observations not covered by preceding Parts.”

Question 14 asks: "Please tell us any information or comments you would like us to consider as we proceed in establishing the Scheme."

In your answer, please highlight these following key points (feel free to express them in your own words):

•    The scheme must be open to ALL women who lose a baby in pregnancy before 24 weeks, including loss through abortion.

•    Women grieving after an abortion must be explicitly included and acknowledged in this scheme.

•    Any official information on the scheme (leaflets, advice, and guidance for health professionals and the public) must clearly state that women who are grieving after an abortion can apply for a certificate.

•    Pregnancy loss, whether through miscarriage or abortion, leaves many women experiencing deep grief that often goes unacknowledged. A certificate will help give them recognition, dignity, and compassion.

•    Recognising a woman's grief after an abortion can support their mental health and emotional healing by affirming that their baby existed and their grief is valid.

•    Issuing certificates for women grieving after abortion is not about politics: it is about compassion, healing, and recognising every baby loss as significant.

Your voice can truly make a difference, so please act TODAY!

If you have already responded — thank you for speaking up for the dignity and humanity of every child. Your support has made a difference. Please also consider forwarding this email to a friend or family member who could take part. Together we can ensure a strong response before the deadline.

Every baby matters. Every loss matters. Let’s make sure the Northern Ireland Government at Stormont hears this message loud and clear before the consultation closes.

For life,

Bernadette Smyth
