Olympic View Transfer Station returns to normal operations following compactor installation
Contractor crews working for the Kitsap County Solid Waste Division are completing final touches on the installation of a second garbage compactor at the Olympic View Transfer Station [ [link removed] ].
Power has been restored to the facility, and customers can now expect normal operations to resume. The new compactor is scheduled to begin processing garbage later this week, following final inspections.
What was done
A new SSI Shredding Systems 4500SPH Pre-load Garbage Compactor [ [link removed] ] was installed at the transfer station. During installation, the facility operated on multiple generators, and customers experienced some service delays. Thank you for your patience throughout this project!
Why this was needed
The Olympic View Transfer Station, owned by Kitsap County and operated by WM, receives all municipal solid waste generated in Kitsap County. At the facility, compactors load garbage into 48-foot intermodal containers, which are then transported by rail to the Columbia Ridge Landfill [ [link removed] ] in Arlington, Oregon.
Previously, the facility relied on a single garbage compactor that's nearing the end of its service life and requires frequent repairs. This has led to periodic facility closures and service interruptions.
The new compactor will improve operational reliability by adding redundancy, increasing processing capacity, and helping to prevent unplanned shutdowns.
The original compactor will remain in service until its planned replacement in 2026.
