Dear john,

Even with Congress out of session, our work for the people of the Fighting Fifth District continues. This past month was busy, including a joint town hall with Councilmember Andrea L. Boone and a housing tour across Atlanta. The pace of progress never stopped.

Meeting with you all is a reminder of why I do this work: to create real solutions. While the district work period may be over, my commitment to working for you doesn't stop.

Hearing From the Fighting Fifth at the Joint Town Hall with Atlanta Councilmember Andrea L. Boone

Our Joint Town Hall with Atlanta Councilmember Andrea L. Boone was a success and an opportunity to hear from the Fighting Fifth.

With Trump and Republicans coming after your Social Security benefits at every angle, we had the opportunity to discuss what we can do moving forward.

I am committed to protecting these benefits, which are a lifeline for families in the Fighting Fifth.

As always, I am here to serve you! Please do not hesitate to contact my Washington D.C. office at 202-225-3801 or my District Office at 404-659-0116. I look forward to connecting with you soon!

Yours for the People,

Rep. Nikema Williams signature

Nikema Williams

Member of Congress

Honoring 60 years of the Voting Rights Act

As we mark 60 years since the Voting Rights Act, we’re still fighting the same battle. The tactics of voter suppression may look different, but the intent remains the same.

I reintroduced my voting rights legislative package that breaks down barriers to the ballot, expands youth pre-registration, and secures our elections in the Fighting Fifth and across the country.

This will help secure the future of our elections, making them funded, secure, and accessible for everyone, no matter their ZIP code, no matter their bank account.

Working to Protect VA Employees' Rights

At a time when VA employees are leaving in waves to escape a toxic work environment created by the VA Secretary, it's more important than ever to protect our employees' rights.

I wrote a letter to the VA Secretary following the recent termination of Collective Bargaining Agreements for VA workers.

Calling on the White House Office of Management and Budget to Release CDC Grants

The White House Office of Management and Budget has frozen millions in CDC grants, funds that Congress has already approved. This directly impacts the Fighting Fifth, where these funds are important for jobs and telehealth services, especially in rural and marginalized communities. This month, I joined the call for the immediate release of these funds.

Fighting to Protect Federal Funding for Summer Student Meal Programs

For the second year in a row, Governor Kemp has declined federal funding for the USDA's summer EBT program. This decision withholds $40 per month per eligible child in food assistance from our most marginalized families, even as food insecurity rises.

In response, I joined Congresswoman Lucy McBath and other members of the Georgia delegation to urge Governor Kemp to prioritize the children of the Fighting Fifth and all of Georgia by accepting this federal summer meal program funding.

Working to Stop Donald Trump's D.C. Takeover

We must stop Donald Trump's unlawful takeover of D.C. I've co-sponsored two bills to achieve this: one to restrict the President's authority over D.C., and another to mandate that the President report to Congress before deploying the National Guard in situations not related to disaster relief.

Mary Parker Back to School Family Fun Fest

This month, students across the Fighting Fifth are back in school as summer winds down! Before the school year began, I attended the Mary Parker Foundation's Back To School Family Fun Fest. It was nice to connect with families from across the district and provide them with resources for a successful academic year.

Finding Real Solutions at the GA Power Energy Savings and Financial Wealth Forum

With summer utility bills skyrocketing, it’s important that I meet with leaders to discuss how we can better support our Fighting Fifth families. I met with leaders at the Georgia Power Energy Savings and Financial Forum to discuss solutions for our Fighting Fifth families and address the energy insecurity crisis. We talked about expanding the Weatherization Assistance Program, which would help cut costs, enhance safety, and create jobs across the district.

These conversations help us find real solutions that benefit everyone, and are discussions I always bring back to Washington, D.C. When we collaborate, we find real solutions.

In Community at National Night Out

National Night Out was a great opportunity to connect with community leaders, play games, and build fellowship across the district. With Team Nikema, I enjoyed coming together for a common cause to promote safer and stronger neighborhoods.

Touring the New City of Brookhaven City Center

My district work period tour continued with a visit to the new City of Brookhaven City Center and Buford Highway Projects, following my stop at the Atlanta Housing Authority. This tour was special as I helped secure the federal funds for these initiatives through the bipartisan infrastructure law. We must invest in our communities, creating desirable places for people to live, work, and enjoy.

Making Sure Every Fighting Fifth Family Has Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is the foundation for building stable communities. I recently toured affordable developments in the #FightingFifth with Atlanta Housing, seeing firsthand how they are providing homes for over 42,000 residents in the district. Everyone, regardless of their bank account or ZIP code, deserves an affordable place to call home.

Touring Around Clayton State University

A quality education is the foundation of success. On my tour of Clayton State University, I saw firsthand how hands-on learning empowers students.

Many rely on federal funding—funding now under threat from Trump and Republicans. Without it, students lose access to the education they deserve.

From nursing to criminal justice, CSU equips students with the tools to succeed and lead.

Fighting For Veterans at the Atlanta Surge Event

Everyone deserves affordable and desirable housing. At the Atlanta Surge event,  I had the opportunity to meet with veterans and discuss how we can provide them with housing resources for unsheltered veterans.  Below is a picture of me and my new friend, Mr. Sam, who was previously paying nightly to stay in a hotel. Thanks to the Atlanta Surge, he now has a permanent roof over his head. It is powerful stories like Mr. Sam's that inspire me.

Supporting Fighting Fifth Small Businesses

August was Black Business Month, and y’all know that I had to stop in at Kenley’s for breakfast. Small businesses fuel our community and economy, and we must continue to support them.

Meeting With the Fighting Fifth Small Business Council

The reason I started the Fighting Fifth Small Business and Community Council was to hear directly from our small businesses in the Fighting Fifth. I had the chance to meet with the Fighting Fifth Small Business & Community Council. In Georgia, small businesses make up 99.7% of Georgia’s business. They create jobs, drive innovation, and build community. It is important that I make sure they have the resources they need to thrive.

If you're interested in getting involved, please contact our team. You can also check out the businesses currently on the council.
