Reports have found that the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) allowed more than 8 million riders to evade fares. Fare evasion cost MCTS more than $10 million, almost its total operating deficit.
This is wrong and harms the taxpayers helping fund this system. It is also fundamentally unfair to the hardworking families who use the system, follow the rules, and pay their fair share.
MCTS receives roughly $57 million in federal funding annually. There is a clear need for federal oversight to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used appropriately.
Last week, I wrote to Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy requesting that DOT implement new oversight over how funds are expended across the country.
