On September 19, 2010, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, I stepped on an IED while protecting my fellow soldiers. The blast took both of my legs, part of my arm, and a finger.
When I woke up in Walter Reed, many would have assumed my service to America was over.
That’s when my late father gave me the greatest gift he ever could:
“You can’t let this keep you down. Your job is defending your country—don’t let the best defense be in your past.”
Those words lit a fire in me that’s never gone out. I learned to walk again, earned a degree from Harvard, raised a family, and flipped a Democrat seat in Congress.
Now, I’m leading the House Foreign Affairs Committee and fighting beside President Trump to secure the border, cut taxes, and protect America. But I can’t fight alone.
