John,
On August 27, nearly 400 people gathered at Carnegie Mellon University for "The Many Over the Money: A Roundtable on Money in Politics ," co-hosted by Free Speech For People and featuring Congresswoman Summer Lee.
The event brought students, community leaders, and everyday voters together to take on one of the most urgent challenges to our democracy: the corrupting influence of big money in politics.
As Congresswoman Lee said:
“Our democracy should answer to the people, not the powerful… Buying elections should never be accepted as the new norm in our democracy. The future of our communities depends on breaking the stranglehold of big money so that every voice, not just the wealthiest few, shapes the direction of this country.”
Alexandra Flores-Quilty, our Campaign Director, and Courtney Hostetler, our Legal Director, joined Rep. Lee to make the case for why legislation to abolish super PACs and a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United are essential to restoring integrity in our elections.

In March 2025, on the 15th anniversary of the D.C Circuit Court’s decision in SpeechNow.org v. FEC, Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12), Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17), and additional Members of Congress introduced the Abolish Super PACs Act - HR 2352, legislation that would end super PACs in federal elections.
The bill would place a $5,000 per calendar year limit on contributions to super PACs, effectively abolishing them. We are proud to have worked closely with Congresswoman Lee’s office in drafting this important legislation.
Since the emergence of super PACs in 2010, the nation has witnessed an explosion of campaign spending, fueled largely by unlimited donations from billionaires and corporate interests. With super PACs, wealthy donors and big money interests are wielding alarming and disproportionate influence in our elections and our political process, creating new threats of corruption and drowning out the voices of ordinary citizens. From questions of climate change to economic justice and healthcare to a sustainable economy, big money forces are dominating the discussion and undermining the promise of political equality for all. FSFP is fighting back against this threat to our democracy with bold and innovative action.
Together, we are building a movement that puts people over profits and ensures every voice counts equally in our democracy. Thank you for standing with us.
In solidarity,
John Bonifaz
