Your Utility Bill is powering the future of tech, and the demise of Black communities

Digital redlining is destroying communities and driving your utility costs up! But we can hold electric companies accountable.

Sign Our Petition to Stop Electric Companies From Hiking Up Our Utility Bills

John,

Color Of Change is standing firm against electric companies’ petition for a $29 billion rate hike to pay for artificial intelligence. This hike will disproportionately harm Black, Brown, and low-income communities. We are demanding that electric companies stop their campaign for a $29 billion rate hike.

Electric companies are pushing for consumers to pay for the demise of their communities. Utility Companies are aware that artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding, and the energy supply is environmentally and financially costly. However, instead of demanding tech corporations such as xA/GrokI, Google, Amazon, ChatGPT, and others lower their energy outputs, they are instead petitioning for a portion of consumers' electric bills to be allocated to these costs.

Digital redlining is the new Jim Crow; it exploits land, labor, and livelihoods. Color Of Change’s Black Tech Agenda fights for equity and justice in the digital age. But policy doesn’t change without public pressure.

Tell the electric companies: We won’t let tech corporations power their future on our backs. Sign our petition today!

Black communities are already on the brink of an economic crisis. The price of living is surging; the Black unemployment rate rose to a whopping 7.2% in July1; and electric companies are working against the financial and environmental interests of Black people nationwide. As material conditions for Black people worsen, and the environmental health of our communities is attacked, we cannot allow utility companies to put more financial burdens on Black communities.

We are asking you to sign our petition to STOP electric companies from hiking up our utility bills. We demand they:

  1. Cancel or withdraw proposed rate increases tied to AI/data center energy needs.
  2. Publicly disclose how much customer rate increases are being used to fund corporate data infrastructure.
  3. Commit to a community benefits agreement (CBA) for any new infrastructure project that:
  • Includes local reinvestment
  • Addresses environmental concerns
  • Guarantees no-cost transfer to low-income consumers
  • Invest in renewable energy rather than expanding fossil fuel use for tech clients.
  • Cease lobbying for AI-related infrastructure without community consent.
  • Consider potential environmental, financial, and long-term impacts on underrepresented communities
