Dear John,
Labor Day brought us a short week last week, ushering in the last gasps of summer and the first day of school. It also offered a moment to reflect on the power of New York City workers and the long history of organized labor across the city.
From enforcing the prevailing wage to advocating for better labor practices on behalf of NYC pension funds, the Office of the Comptroller is committed to the pursuit of justice for workers and a more equal economy.
I was so proud to be at the New York City Central Labor Council’s Labor Day reception to support workers across our city – including the Women's National Basketball Players Association. Pay the Players! 🏀✊

Who are the worst employers in New York City? We just updated and expanded [[link removed]] our searchable Employer Violation Dashboard – see who made this year's Employer Wall of Shame! [[link removed]] Now New Yorkers can see which companies broke the law in 2024 – committing wage theft across industries, and violating Fair Workweek, Paid Safe and Sick Leave, the Fast Food Worker Just Cause Law, and other health and safety laws.
Since launching this tool last year, the Dashboard has become a powerful resource for shining a light on the city’s worst labor violators – like Amazon, Cava, and Chipotle [[link removed]] . We will always hold bad actors accountable for violating our City’s workplace laws.

Also last week, we announced the recovery of nearly $900,000 [[link removed]] for nearly two dozen workers who were underpaid for their work renovating NYPD precincts. This win builds off another groundbreaking win we reached last month: a $3 million settlement [[link removed]] for prevailing wages owed to workers hired to clean and disinfect subway cars during the Covid-19 pandemic.
These agreements bring the sum of settlements brokered by the Comptroller's Office on behalf of unpaid workers to $15 million since 2022! Learn more [[link removed]] about how our Workers' Rights Team works to recover stolen wages.
When workers fight, workers win. We’ll have more updates soon on how we’re delivering for New Yorkers across the city.
In Solidarity,
Brad
P.S. Solidarity with the more than 100 unionized drivers who joined the Teamsters one year ago and were just illegally fired by Amazon at the DBK4 facility in Queens. Let's be clear: Amazon should reinstate the drivers, recognize the union and bargain with its workers.
