It’s officially National Suicide Prevention Week, taking place September 7–13.
This week, and all month long, we’re focusing on the theme of “Looking Out for Each Other.” Connection is a powerful tool in the fight against suicide. We know from research that feeling connected to family and community support is one of the most important protective factors in reducing the likelihood of suicide. That’s why we’re shedding light on powerful opportunities for connection available right here in AFSP’s community:
- Join a [Community Walk]([link removed]) near you! AFSP's Out of the Darkness Walks bring nearly a quarter of a million people together each year, sending the message that suicide can no longer exist in the shadows, and raising much-needed awareness and funds for this leading cause of death.
- Learn about our new [Hard Hat Courage]([link removed]) initiative. AFSP launched Hart Hat Courage to confront high rates of suicide in the construction community, and to evolve the industry into one that prioritizes mental health alongside physical safety.
- Tune into [Audacy’s “I’m Listening”]([link removed]) broadcast special! September 9–15, tune into your [local radio station]([link removed]) to hear AFSP Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine Yu Moutier in conversation with Audacy’s host Katie Neil about youth, maternal, and first responder mental health. Learn helpful information and tips that can help you better look out for each other this September and beyond.
At AFSP, community is at the heart of everything we do. Members of our community show up in all kinds of ways –– by joining an Out of the Darkness Walk, volunteering for one of [our local chapters]([link removed]) across the country, advocating for important policy priorities, or [making a gift]([link removed]) to help us fund research, advocacy, prevention education, and loss support programs. If suicide prevention is close to your heart, then there’s a place for you in our community.
For our most recent events, make sure to check our [national calendar]([link removed]) throughout the month.
