Imagine lying in bed as a child. Thinking that you’re safe, you fall asleep, only to be shaken awake with no warning by a stranger in the middle of the night. This stranger angrily tells you it’s time to get up and you only have two hours to pack your things. Confused and exhausted, you ask why. But their response makes no sense. You’re told that you’re being sent back to a country you fled for fear of being hurt or even killed.
This is how hundreds of Guatemalan children in immigration proceedings spent their labor day weekend. They were woken up by ICE officials and pulled out of their beds in the dark, only to be unlawfully placed on a deportation flight bound for Guatemala.
This unprecedented attack on children was successfully blocked by federal judge thanks to a class action lawsuit [[link removed]] filed by tireless advocates and litigators at the National Immigration Law Center and the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. But our work is far from over.
