Dear SPUC supporter,
In just four days time, peers will debate the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at Second Reading in the House of Lords. This assisted suicide bill was introduced by Kim Leadbeater MP in the Commons, and is being sponsored by Lord Falconer of Thoroton in the Lords. While Lords rarely vote at Second Reading, and any real change is likely to happen at the following Report and Committee stages, the debate on 12 September will be crucial in setting the tone for later developments. 201 peers have now put their names down to speak in the debate - so many that the Government have had to grant a second day of debate, on 19 September.
Up to now, we have been encouraging you to contact Lords using physical letters, both because paper letters are more impactful, and because not all peers have publicly available email addresses. Our webtool has been set up to help you write paper letters.
However, with just four days to go, we are changing the tool to help you write emails to Members of the House of Lords.
The tool will bring up a Peer for you to write to, and an editable template. When you have completed your message, you will then be sent an email with your message, and instructions on emailing it to the chosen Peer. This extra step means that the email is sent from your own email address, rather than displaying as coming from SPUC’s servers.
While we are now providing a template, to ensure as many peers are contacted as possible, please edit it into your own words, and to reflect your own concerns. Your own personal experience and worries are far more impactful than any template text.
Please email the Lords now, asking them to oppose the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

If you have chosen a specific peer to write to, rather than the random one assigned by the tool, you can find their contact details here. If they do not have an email address listed, address your email to a specific member and send to: [email protected]
I explain in more detail how and why we should write to the Lords in the video below - give it a watch!
