Hi, John,
The deadline is this Thursday, July 2, to sign up for our newest course: Defund the Police. Click here to learn more about the course and save your seat before all the spots are filled.
On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Though enslaved people were already legally free, many had still labored in Texas and the South for two years after Lincoln's declaration.
We now celebrate Juneteenth in honor of every victory we have won over white supremacy and as a reminder of how much more work there is left to do. While being legally free, we know that Black folks, immigrants, and working class people have rarely experienced freedom from police violence and harassment from the state.
We've had enough. Nationally, the mandate to “Defund the Police” has taken on a life of its own. We, however, understand this mandate as part of an ongoing project of abolition that has not yet been fully realized.
Join Sunrise Movement, Mijente, Dream Defenders, AfroSocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus, and Southerners on New Ground, as we deepen our understanding of abolition and learn how to turn the mandate to “Defund the Police” into tangible action in our communities.
By the end of this 4-day crash course to Defund the Police, you will:
-
Understand what exactly the demand “Defund the Police” means
-
Envision what a world without police could look like
-
Get ready to take action to defund police in your community
Sign up by this Thursday to take the class, which runs next week, Monday-Thursday, July 6-9.
Help us achieve a country in which we’re all truly free.
