With too many spineless Democrats standing on the sidelines watching this unfold in silence, we need more bold leaders in Congress who are unafraid to stand up and speak up for their communities — no matter how chilling the villain.

When she was just 15 years old, her family lived through every immigrant or mixed-status family’s worst nightmare: her father was deported, leaving her mother to raise four daughters alone. Her mom worked two and three jobs just to make ends meet for her daughters, but times were still tough, and her family experienced housing insecurity, living in her mother’s car, shelters, family members’ homes, and eventually a one-bedroom apartment.

CA-34 has one of the largest immigrant populations in the country: about one-third of Los Angeles residents are immigrants, and one-sixth are likely undocumented. The city has been thrust into the national spotlight with Trump’s cruel focus on ICE raids and his directive for the National Guard to occupy the city and use local parks as training grounds.

While Trump makes an example out of her district for his fascist military takeover, Angela has a clear and bold vision to fight back for her community and families like hers. She believes immigration policy should reflect the values of dignity, opportunity, and inclusion — that’s why she supports:

• A clear pathway to citizenship for all, including the over 11 million undocumented people living in the United States;
• Protections for mixed-status families and expanded access to social services like healthcare, housing, and education;
• Increased federal funding for legal representation in immigration courts, community integration programs, and modernized and humane asylum processes.

Her incumbent opponent, on the other hand, has been more concerned with gaining and retaining power at any cost. Instead of fighting back against the special interests who got us here, Rep. Jimmy Gomez is bankrolled by the same corporate PACs that helped elect Trump and enable this militarized mass deportation effort.

He’s even taken contributions from CoreCivic — one of the key private prison companies profiting from Trump’s cruel immigration crackdown. What that means is, as his community members are terrorized, detained, and denied their basic rights, Jimmy Gomez’s donors are profiting. It’s no wonder his constituents don’t see him as a fighter for their community.

But Angela is already fighting back — and unlike Jimmy, she won’t take checks from corporate PACs or private prisons. That means she’s going to need ALL of us behind her to win this race.
