Andrew urges all Long Islanders to take this time to remember those we lost, honor the courage of the first responders and law enforcement officers who answered the call, and acknowledge the many survivors and responders who are still battling 9/11-related illnesses. Their bravery saved thousands of lives, and their continued fight reminds us of the lasting cost of that day. As we reflect on September 11th, let us also express our gratitude to the men and women who continue to protect our communities and renew our promise to Never Forget. ANDREW IN THE NEWS What does homeland security mean for Andrew Garbarino? " Long Island Rep. Andrew Garbarino was elected chair of the House Homeland Security Committee in July. The third-term member of Congress now helms a panel with a wide ranging jurisdiction including cybersecurity, counterterrorism, emergency management, transportation security, border security and special event security. Garbarino has taken on the committee as a New Yorker, noting that he is well-aware of the threats facing the state and nation...'My top priorities [as Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security] will be strengthening our nation’s cybersecurity, defending against terrorism and enhancing disaster preparedness and resiliency. As a New Yorker, I know firsthand the threats we face from those who wish us harm. As chairman, I’ll ensure our state and local partners have the resources they need to defend against threats to public safety, while continuing to deliver on our national security commitments at the federal level.' Mullen This week, the corner of Cherry Street and Forest Avenue in Massapequa was renamed in honor of Suffolk County Police Detective Stephen J. Mullen. Detective Mullen dedicated 32 years to the Suffolk County Police Department and lost his life to a 9/11-related illness he developed after working on the search and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. By dedicating this street in his memory, the community has ensured that his bravery, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Andrew provided a Congressional Certificate of Recognition and a Capitol-flown American flag for the occasion to honor his service. He is committed to continuing the fight to safeguard the World Trade Center Health Program so that 9/11 responders and survivors have the care they need and the best possible chance to overcome the illnesses they face. Protecting Our Communities from Human Trafficking This week ECLI-VIBES hosted Bridging the Divide: A Collaborative Response to Human Trafficking in Islandia, bringing together law enforcement, legal experts, and community advocates to strengthen the fight against human trafficking on Long Island. The program highlighted the importance of coordination across agencies and organizations to protect vulnerable populations and bring traffickers to justice. Andrew commends this collaborative effort. He remains committed to continuing the fight against human trafficking and working to keep Long Island communities safe CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Securing a Social Security Appointment After repeatedly struggling to reach the Social Security Administration, including one instance of being kept on hold for nearly three hours before being disconnected, a Deer Park resident reached out to Andrew’s office for assistance. Andrew's casework team immediately contacted the local Social Security office and secured the appointment needed to begin receiving benefits. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. If you need help dealing with a federal agency, contact our office and our team will get to work on your case. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Advances Landmark Cybersecurity Bill as Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security This week, as Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Andrew introduced legislation to strengthen one of the federal government’s most important cybersecurity tools. His bill, the Widespread Information Management for the Welfare of Infrastructure and Government (WIMWIG) Act, reauthorizes and enhances the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 for the next decade and was promptly advanced out of committee with bipartisan support. The WIMWIG Act will improve real-time information sharing on cyber threats between federal and non-federal entities, while preserving strong privacy protections. By updating the law to address emerging threats, including artificial intelligence, the bill ensures that state and local governments, critical infrastructure operators, and small businesses have the tools they need to defend against evolving cyberattacks. Andrew is proud to begin his tenure as Chairman by advancing legislation that has received broad support from industry leaders, cybersecurity experts, and state and local officials. He will continue working to strengthen America’s cyber defenses and ensure the security of the homeland. Andrew Supports Energy and National Security Investments This week, Andrew voted for the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill would invest in the modernization of our nuclear deterrent, support the U.S. Navy’s nuclear fleet, and block the sale of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China. The legislation also boosts domestic energy production by investing in critical minerals, advancing new energy technologies, and reversing wasteful spending on partisan programs. With this vote, Andrew reaffirmed his commitment to unleashing American energy, reducing reliance on foreign adversaries, and protecting our national security. Thanks for reading!
